Three Nights, Two and a Half Day Walk

Day One

After breakfast, grab your lunch and head off along the coast road and up an old bullock track to the cell-tower where you can enjoy spectacular views of Castlepoint to the north and south to the Kaiwhata River.

You then cross into rolling farmland, meandering along a ridge with the sea on your right as you walk. Enjoy lunch at a shepherd’s hut, then carry on downhill arriving at Ngaiana Homestead. There you stay in the old station whare. Your evening’s provisions await you, well deserved after about 13kms of walking, along with breakfast and lunch for day two.

If you don’t just want to put your feet up, there is an opportunity to take a loop walk through regenerating bush on Ngaiana (approximately 1 to 1.5 hours).

Day Two

The second day, about a 17km walk, starts with rolling hills, then meanders down along the Whareama River to its mouth, which can be tranquil or dramatic, depending on the weather. The walk follows the coast, with a lot of it on the beach if you choose, and you will make your way back to Orui for your final night.

Day Three

After breakfast there is a 3 hour walk south to enjoy, with a loop walk up on to coastal terrace farmland, and back along the beach to your car.

Alternatively, try your swing on 9 holes of golf at our quaint local course (clubs provided on request), a game of tennis, or simply enjoy the tranquil beach setting for swimming or relaxing.

You could have coffee or lunch at the Riversdale beach store or meander off in your car and explore the small towns of Greytown, Gladstone and Martinborough – great for lunch, shopping and wine tasting.

Two Nights, Two Day Walk

Day One (4-6 hours walk)

Similar to our three day walk, following breakfast, grab your lunch and head off along the coast road and up an old bullock track to the cell-tower where you can enjoy spectacular views of Castlepoint to the north and round to the Kaiwhata River to the south.

Sign posts will direct you across rolling farmland and you will meander along a ridge with the sea on your right as you walk. Enjoy lunch at a shepherd’s hut, then carry on downhill arriving at Ngaiana Homestead. There you stay in the old station whare. Your evening’s provisions await you, along with breakfast and lunch for day two.

If your well deserved glass of wine can wait a little longer, take a loop walk through regenerating bush on Ngaiana (approximately 1 to 1.5 hours).

Day Two (4-6 hours walk)

The second day starts with rolling hills, then meanders down along the sparkling Whareama River to its mouth, which can be tranquil or dramatic, depending on the weather. You now walk south along the beach, following the coast. You can choose to stay on the beach or follow the track. Once back at Orui Station, a cup of tea or coffee awaits you before you make your way home.
